综合英语(一) Unit 3 Whatever Happened to Manners? 主讲人:高娜娟 Contents 1. Linda Dano (born Linda Rae Wildermuth on May 12,1943) is a well-known American soap opera actress, a long-time performer in daytime dramas, and a best-selling author and businesswoman. She played the role of a romance novelist from 1982 to 1999 on Another World, a television sop opera that ran on the NBC network from May 4,1964 to June 25,1999. Her role on Another World won her the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in 1993. Dano was married for over twenty years to the late advertising executive Frank Attardi, who had a successful career in advertising, and in the 1960s was responsible for many memorable ad campaigns for companies like Estee Lauder, Perrier, Ragu and Kimberly-Clark, and who, because of Linda, ventured in front of the camera to play a role on Another World in the 1980s. Co-authoring with Anne Kyle, Dano published two books: Living Great: Style Expert and Television Star Linda Dano Shows You How to Bring Style Home with Her Easy, Affordable Decorating Ideas and Techniques(1998), and Looking Great: Fashion Authority and Television Star Linda Dano Shares Her Style and Beauty Secrets to Help You Look Your Best(1998). 2. Good manners Good manners are the first mark of good breeding and reflect directly on a person’s upbringing. Some rules of etiquette or good manners are different in different communities. For example, making some sound while eating a soup is okay in China, but is bad manners in lots of western countries. Shaking hands is good manners abroad, but in India, the traditional “namaste” is favored. Eating with the fingers is common in some countries, but frowned upon elsewhere in the world. However, good manners have a lot to do with being considerate and sympathetic towards others’ feelings. That is a human value and has little to do with custom.
