Course Description Course Objectives Course Learning Outcomes Assessment of the Learning Outcomes Requirements and Grades Course Materials Course Assessment Course Description This course treats the art of translation from the dual perspectives of theory and practice. This course offers a comprehensive survey of major translation theories, such as the linguistic, functionalist, Descriptive, Cultural Studies, and philosophical translation theories. Course Objectives: The purpose of the course is to provide students with a theoretical and methodological base for evaluating and studying translation through translating and discussing a range of articles about translation theories and techniques. Translation/Translating/ Translations Translation----the most general sense, the abstract concept which encompasses both the process of translating and the product of that process. Translating---- the process (to translate; the activity rather than the tangible object); emphasize on the act of translation Translations---- the product of translating (i.e. the translated text); emphasize on the result of translation. Course Learning Outcomes To learn the basic theories, approaches, and specialized terminology of the discipline of translation. Be able to apply these theories and approaches, and utilize the specialized terminology in actual translation situations in a variety of both English and Chinese texts. Be able to analyze an English (Chinese) text translated into Chinese (English) and critique the specific choices made by the translator. Assessment of the Learning Outcomes The first learning outcome will be assessed by the presentations in class . The second learning outcome will be assessed by in-class exercises and out-class assignments. The third learning outcome will be assessed through translation project of different texts. Each class session will include: Explanation of two translation terms by pair work.
