T.S. Eliot The Wonderful World of… Youth born in St. Louis, Missouri Sept. 26, 1888 son of Henry Ware Eliot and Charlotte Champe Stearns Father was the president of the Hydraulic-Press Brick Company Mother was a former teacher, a volunteer at the Humanity Club of St. Louis, and an amateur poet youngest of seven children Had a congenital double hernia The family had a home in Eastern Point, in Gloucester, Massachusetts built in 1896 where Eliot spent some of his childhood. Eliot felt alienated from his two homes in the Southwest and in New England. Schooling Years attended Smith Academy in St. Louis until he was sixteen visited St. Louis Worlds Fair in 1904 which influenced him to write short stories for the Smith Academy Record Spent a year at Milton Academy in 1905 Then went on in his elder brother’s footsteps to attend Harvard. Harvard Campus… College Years Was a social student with eclectic course load that ended up getting him on academic probation. Was romantically involved with Emily Hale Gained a B.A. in an elective program in comparative literature in three years, and an M.A. in English literature in the fourth. In 1908 The Symbolist Movement in Literature by Arthur Symons brought him into the influence of Jules Laforgue which influenced his poetic voice 1910 and 1911 Eliot wrote The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, Portrait of a Lady, La Figlia Che Piange, Preludes, and Rhapsody on a Windy Night. into a notebook- these poems would later become famous. Vivian Haigh-Wood In 1915 Eliots old friend Scofield Thayer (from Milton Academy and Harvard) introduced him to his sister Vivian Haigh-Wood and married her impulsively. His parents were disturbed by this marriage due to her emotional and physical problems They remained in England and had no children. Vivian Haigh-Wood Eliot Married Life Eliot and Vivian first lived with Bertrand Russell who Vivien had a brief affair with. Eliot tried to support them by teaching school, reviewing and lecturing a
