Chapter 4: Content Organization Copyright ? 2004 by Prentice Hall * Another factor creeps in here: our brains make astonishing accommodations. The background here is definitely magenta, but if you have no other color to compare it with, the brain may say, in effect, “Oh, that’s text on a white background. Paper is always white, unless it’s really different.” I have a slide set with a lot of different colors that are not too far from white; each pair of samples is separated by a slide of some familiar painting, to destroy color memory. A few slides really are white. I ask students to keep a running score of which ones are white and which are not. Nobody has ever gotten a perfect score. That’s why a color slide show can get by with things that fail miserably with color prints: the viewer of the prints can see everything at once, and differences jump out. Yellow on white is almost illegible; pure blue on white isn’t bad. Photoshop reports both of them to be of 100% maximum brightness. The Adobe and Microsoft formulas for computing brightness (Adobe) or luminance (Microsoft) do not take into account these differences in o
