Violence at Work Occurs when a Worker is Made to Feel: Unsafe Threatened The target of violent acts You can be victimized by your: Boss Co-workers Customers To deal with an angry or irate customer: Remain calm. Try and calm the other person. Find ways to help the customer “save face”. Listen carefully. Put yourself in THEIR place so you can help solve the problem. Ask for help from a supervisor if you can”t resolve the problem. DO NOT LOSE YOUR TEMPER. To Prevent Robberies Keep alert. Greet everyone who enters the store. Look directly into their eyes. Keep money in the cash register to a minimum. Keep the store clean and well lit. In Case of Robbery Listen carefully and obey the robber. DON’T BE A HERO! Don’t fight. Don’t use a weapon. Give them what they want. Be observant but don’t stare. Call the police as soon as they have left. Bomb Threats Follow procedures established by your place of work. Notify authorities. Maintain order and calm. Evacuate if necessary. Shoplifting Follow your workplace procedures. Do not become physically involved with the shoplifter. Don’t be a HERO! Call the authorities. * * It may include: Homicide Assault Harassment Verbal Threats It may ALSO include: Robbery Bomb Threats Irate Customers Shop Lifters If you feel your boss is victimizing you see your School to Career Coordinator IMMEDIATELY! If your co workers are victimizing you speak with your boss AND your School to Work Coordinator. * * *
