Improvements in working of the RMG and Knitwear Industry in Bangladesh
1 April 2014
Following the tragic incidents in Tazreen and Smart Garment factories and the unprecedented factory collapse of Rana Plaza, the Government of Bangladesh (GoB) has remained sincerely and pro-actively engaged, at the highest level, in taking concerted efforts leading to definite and measurable outcomes in addressing the safety, security and labour issues in RMG sector. Focus has not only been in taking all precautionary measures for mitigating risks to avoid recurrence of such incidents, but also in making the manufacturing industry sustainable in Bangladesh. The continuing advancements made by Bangladesh in improving workers’ rights situation and fire safety in Bangladesh are aimed at ensuring dignity and sustainably improving safety, security and well-being of all workers in productive manufacturing, including RMG sector. This engagement emerges from wider appreciation of the way RMG sector impacts on lives and livelihoods of around four and half million people involved also the contribution that the sector continues to make on overall advancement over a range of key social and economic indicators for Bangladesh, including empowerment of women.
In the process, GoB engaged exporters, workers associations and all civil society stakeholders in building needed wider coalition. GoB has remained engaged with International labour Organization (ILO), European Union, the United States and other development partners e.g. Canada, the Netherlands in taking concrete actions for improving the situation. Bangladesh, along with the European Union, the Unites States and ILO adopted “Sustainability Compact for continuous improvements in labour rights and factory safety in the Ready-Made Garment and Knitwea
