Grammar and usage 模块七 Unit 1 Living with technology Transitive verbs take an object. Intransitive verbs do not take an object. 1. A transitive verb can take an object, a direct object and an indirect object, or an object and a complement. Transitive verbs and intransitive verbs The object can be a noun, a pronoun, an infinitive, a verb-ing or an object clause. ①An American, Philo Farnsworth, made important breakthroughs in the development of TV in the late 1920s and early 1930s. ②It was not until the early 1950s that most tape recorders began using plastic tape as they do today. ③Who can foresee what the future will bring? Most transitive verbs can be used in the passive voice. 2 Intransitive verbs do not take an object, and cannot be used in the passive voice. Intransitive verbs can usually be followed by a prepositional phrase. 3.
