070 2014 \ 04 History Theory Rereading the Classics Re-encountering Alvar Aalto ABSTRACT TakingAlvar Aaltosworks as an example, this paperargues that Aalto, aware of severe problems of the industrialera, had his design humanize the Machine Age. Through his practice, Aaltoexplored flexible standardization and pioneered the modernization of Finnish architecture and urban environment, developing architectural language based on his own personal experience and daily life to mend the rift between human and the nature. This article also compares Aaltos work with other masterpieces in modern architectural history to briefly analyze the meaning his artless design language, and sheds the relevance of its significance to contemporary Chinese architecture.
