Previous approaches to supporting video on packet-switchednetworks include deterministic service, statistical service, predicted ser-vice, and feedback-based schemes. These schemes represent dierent trade-os in quality of service (QOS), achievable network utilization, andmethod of dealing with overload. In this paper, we propose a new servicethat attempts to strike an ecient balance with the above tradeos. Theapproach is based on deterministic guarantees with client controlled rene-gotiation of QOS parameters and graceful adaptation during overloadperiods. We evaluate the scheme using two traces of MPEG-compressedvideo and show that, even with simple renegotiation polices and rela-tively low renegotiation frequencies, high network utilization in the rangeof 50% to 80% can be achieved. For trac that is bursty over long inter-vals, this represents a 100% to 150% improvement in network utilizationcompared to deterministic service. Compared to statistical and predictedservice, our approach allows more graceful and client-controlled QOSdegradation during overload period.1 Introduction and MotivationFuture integrated services networks will have to support applicationswith diverse trac characteristics and performance requirements.
