Abstract
Four different model buildings were tested ,n a boundary layer wind tunnel to invest=gate wind
induced torsion on tall bu,ldings. Each models cross sect=on corresponded to a bas,c shape,
Rectangular, Diamond, Triangular and D-shaped. Propert,es such as aspect rat,o, build,rig
dens,ty and damping were kept constant. Each model was tested at vary,ng reduced velocit,es
and angles of wind inc,dence under wind exc,tat,on correspond,ng to Terrain Categories 2 and 4
as set out by AS 1170.2-1989. Results ind,cate that the tors,onal response varies dramat,cally
with changes in bu,ld,ng cross sect=on. The Triangular shaped model produced a dynam,c
tors,onal response far in excess of any other model tested Torque spectra for the Triangular
and Rectangular models indicated that at certain angles of wind incidence and reduced velocity,
wake induced and flow reattachment induced tots,on was evident The D-shape and D,amond
models y,elded significantly lower torsional response.
1 INTRODUCTION
W,nd induced response of tall build,ngs is a phenomenon which has been recogn,sed for some
t,me Methods for calculat,ng the translational response of high rise structures are prevalent
wlth,n most wind load,rig codes. Design eng,neers have very httle reformat,on at the,r disposal
to calculate the assoc,ated torsional response. Prev,ous w,nd tunnel tests suggest that the
torsional response is sign,f,cant and therefore should not be ,gnored.
