 MACROBUTTON AcceptAllChangesShown （双击页眉后，单击此处输入你的论文题目即可）  第PAGE 2页 第 PAGE 19页 第 PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 15页 A Comparative Study on the Translation between English and Chinese Idioms 英汉习语翻译比较研究 Abstract Idioms are the essense of a language.Both English and Chinese idioms have their own unique cultural characteristics.This makes the task of translation between English and Chinese idioms quite difficult.This thesis first gives the definitions of English idioms and Chinese idioms,which is helpful for readers to understand the target subject of this study,then probes into the cultural causes of the differences in English and Chinese idioms from the aspects of different living circumstances,different religions,different cognitions of things,different historical allusions,different customs and habits,ect.After that,it divides idioms into several classes according to the relations between English and Chinese idioms in terms of their vehicles and metaphorical meanings,such as the idioms of corresponding relationship;idioms of semi-corresponding relationship;idioms of non-corresponding relationship.Finally,it summarizes the translation methods used in each kind of idioms in accordance with the classification that has been discussed before.For example,the translation method of the first kind of idioms is literal translation,that of the second kind is free translation and transformation,and there are two main methods of tranlation between the third kind of idioms—domestication and foreignization. All the significance of this thesis is to solve the difficult problems of the translation between English and Chinese idioms ,which is helpful for the translation work and the future study.
