Affective factors of college students and English listening teaching
1.0 Introduction
American linguist Krashen(1982)believes that there is no fundamental difference between the way we acquire our first language and our second language. He claims that human beings have innate abilities that guide our language learning procedure. Infants can learn their mother tongue simply by listening to the spoken language which is meaningful to them and it is the same that we acquire a foreign language. Language acquisition is achieved by large amount of comprehensible input and listening is the most important method to acquire comprehensible input. Therefore, as a basic skill of verbal communication, listening has become more and more important for English learners. Listening teaching also occupies an important position in English teaching. The teaching aim of college English is to develop students’comprehensive abilities especially listening ability. With the reform of CET 4 and CET 6, there has been a growing strength of English listening comprehension.
Affection is necessary for English learners and it is an attitude experience of a person and it comes from when objective things can meet this person’s needs. Affection mainly reflects the relationship between individual needs and objective things. If objective things can meet people’s needs or comply with people’s wishes, pleasant experiences will be produced and on the contrary if objective things can not meet people’s needs or go against people’s wishes, harrowing experience will immediately appear. In the process of teaching, students’ affective characteristics decide their learning effect. Differences of listening level exist in all the English learners. That is because there are several factors influence students’ listening. Among all these factors, affective factors are the most important ones besides intelligence factors.
