Schneider Physik-Institut der Universita?t Zu?rich, Winterthurerstrasse 190, CH-8057,Switzerland We analyze the magnetization, magnetic torque and susceptibility data of La2?xSrxCu 16,18O4 and YBa2 63,65Cu3O7?δ near Tc in terms of the universal 3D-XY scaling relations. It is shown that the isotope effect on Tc mirrors that on the anisotropy γ. Invoking the generic behavior of γ the doping dependence of the isotope effects on the critical properties, including Tc, correlation lengths and magnetic penetration depths are traced back to a change of the mobile carrier concentration. A lot of measurements of the oxygen and copper isotope effect on the magnetization, susceptibility, magnetic torque etc. have been performed on a variety of cuprate superconductors [1–9]. To obtain estimates for the shift of the transition temperature Tc upon isotope exchange, the respective mean-field models [10,11] have been invoked. For the magnetization m they imply that the mean-field transition temperature Tc0 can be estimated by extrapolating m (T ) linearly. To illustrate this traditional treatment we displayed in Fig.1 the data of Batlogg et al. [1] for a nearly optimally doped La1.85Sr0.15Cu 16,18O4 powder sample in terms of 16,18m (T ) vs. T . The straight lines are parallel linear extrapolations, yielding the mean-field estimates 16Tc0 ≈ 34.56 K, 18Tc0 ≈ 34.12 K and ?Tc0/Tc0 ≈ ?0.012, where ?Y = ( 18Y ?16 Y ) /18Y . However, the reliability of these estimates is doubtful because the dominant role of critical fluctuations near Tc [12–21] and the isotope effects on the penetration depth [22–25] etc. are neglected, the anisotropy is not taken into account, and the choice of a linear and parallel portion appears arbitrary. 32 33 34 35 36 -10 -8 -6 -4 -2 0 m ( 1 0- 4 e m u ) T
