This paper describes the implementation of aset-oriented database production rule language proposed inearlier papers. Our implementation uses the extensibilityfeatures of the Starburst database system, and rule execu-tion is fully integrated into database query and transactionprocessing.1 IntroductionIn database systems, a production rules facility allowsdenition of database operations that are executed auto-matically whenever certain events occur or conditions aremet. Production rules in database systems can be usedfor enforcing integrity constraints, maintaining deriveddata, and building ecient knowledge-base and expertsystems. In [WF89,WF90] we propose a syntax for speci-fying production rules in relational database systems anda semantics for rule execution. In keeping with the set-oriented approach of relational data manipulation lan-guages, our production rules are set-oriented|they aretriggered by sets of changes to the database and mayperform sets of changes. The condition and action partsof a production rule may refer to the current state of thedatabase as well as to the sets of changes that triggeredthe rule. Our rule language has now been implementedat the IBM Almaden Research Center as an extension toStarburst. Starburst is a prototype relational databasesystem with a focus on extensibility [H+90]. This paperserves the dual role of describing our implementationof the rule system and illustrating how the extensibilityfeatures of Starburst facilitated its rapid development.Several other research eorts also consider produc-tion rules in database systems.
