“The European Union: What is it and Who Belongs to it?” By: Joe Milharcic; July, 07 Bishop Chatard High School; Indianapolis, IN Estimated Sessions: 1-2 class periods (50 minutes per class) Grade Levels: 9-10 Purpose: To provide a solid understanding of what the European Union is and its impact on the world National Geography Standards: 13 - How the forces of cooperation and conflict among people influence the division and control of Earth’s surface. 16 – The changes that occur in the meaning, use, distribution, and importance of resources. Indiana Standards: Geography and History of the World 7.4 - Prepare maps, timelines, and/or other graphic representations to trace the development and geographic extent of a variety of regional and global cooperative organizations for different time periods. Describe why each was established. Assess their success or lack of success, consequences for citizens, and the role of particular countries in achieving the goals the organizations were established to accomplish. Objectives: Students will understand “what” the EU is, label and color the countries that belong and don’t belong to the EU, and examine the impact that the EU has had on U.S. and foreign policy. Background: I am very big on the KWL instruction method. I like to organize my lesson plans around they KNOW, what they/I WANT to know, and what they LEARNED.
