When the pathways of apoptosis are out of control, it will lead to related diseases. At present it is considered that apoptosis is an independent risk factors of atherosclerotic lesions. Cellular excessive apoptosis in the atherosclerotic plaques plays an important role in the process of the formation of unstable plaques. The relationship between the apoptosis of vascular endothelial cells, vascular smooth muscle cells and macrophage and the atherosclerosis, and the effects of apoptosis on atherosclerotic plaque stability will be discussed in this review.
