There has been at least 200 years for Taishan people going abroad. In Qianlong 39 of Qing dynasty (1774AD), CHEN Jujin from Shanbei, Guanghai town, went to Southeast Asia with his son. This is the earliest record for Taishan people going abroad. 1 of the first 3 Chinese living in the US was Taishanese. During Xianfeng and Tongzhi reigns (1851AD-1875AD), lots of Taishanese went overseas. Funeral rulers′ corruption, social turbulence, poor land and huge population made people no way out; western countries plundered colonies and abducted cheap work force; those were the main reasons why so many Taishanese took great risk going abroad to make a living.
The early overseas Taishanese firstly landed on Malaysia, Singapore and some Southeast Asian countries secondly went to the US, Canada and then South American countries and Australia, thirdly arrived Europe and Africa. Some of them could not tolerate the rough trip and died on the way, the survived mostly were engaged in mining, fossick, railway building, harbor building and farming, besides worked hardly, they endured colonialists′ exploitation, slavery and racial discrimination. They suffered unbelievable sorrows of life. However, the overseas Taishanese carried the hard-working and indomitable spirit, set up farms, restaurants and shops in the places they were living, lived in harmony with local people and incorporated with the urban mainstream society, made great achievements in politics, economics, military, technology, literature and arts, they contributed a lot to the country or region they were living.
Although the overseas Taishanese live far abroad arduously, their love to hometown never lessens. In war time, they positively supported the 1911 Revolution which was led by SUN Yat-Sen.
