presentation Older Learners in SLA Research: A First Look at Working Memory, Feedback, and L2 Development Table of Contents 1. Background 2. Research gap 3. Research design 4. Research result 5. Research indication 1. Research territory Age-related differences in the processes and outcomes of second language acquisition Reasons behind these differences Individual cognitive differences( more strongly associated with L2 attainment after maturation) 2. Previous studies about aptitude DeKeyser: aptitude plays a role in SLA only for adult learners Abrahamsson and Hyltenstam: language aptitude plays a “certain” role for early learners, versus a “crucial” and “decisive” role for adults 3. Cognitive aging about older learners 4. Interactional feedback studies previous studies with younger and child learners: a. age-related differences in interactional features, b. relationships between WM and learners’ responses to feedback during interaction 5. Research gap older adults: a. L2 interactional processes have not been studied b. experience decrements in WM capacity--- hypothetically, may affect their ability to benefit from interactional feedback 6. Research motivation/purpose o To motivate further research into the role of individual differences in interaction-driven SLA by older adults, To expand and fine tune SLA theories about WM To improve L2 pedagogy for an understudied population on language learners 7. Research questions: a. Do older learners of English as an L2 show improvement in L2 question formation following task-based interaction with feedback? b. Is there evidence for a relationship between WM capacity and interaction-driven learning in these older learners? 1.Aging and Cognitive resources 2.Working Memory and SLA 3. Conversational Interaction in a Second Language 4.Age
