CreatingaCultureofInnovation inCanadianSchools DavidC.Dibbon Sinceitsinceptionin????,theGrassRootsProgramhasbeeninstru- mentalinfacilitatingtheintegrationofinformationandcommunica- tiontechnologies(???)intotheclassroomsofCanadian schools.By linking the GrassRoots Program to the school curriculum and pro- vidingincentivesforteacherstoengagestudentsintheprocessofco- creatingelectroniccurriculumresourcesfortheInternet,ithasbeenin- ?uentialintransformingclassroomsintoauthenticcentresoflearning. ThereisoverwhelmingevidencesupportingtheconceptthattheGrass- RootsProgramisapowerfulconnectorbetween???andnewteaching theories. This paper provides an overview of innovation, a background to some of the challenges associated with large-scale innovation in the CanadianK-??schoolsystemandthe?ndingsfromacollectionof?? case studiesconductedin innovative schoolsin Canada. Ananalysis ofthedatacontainedinthecasestudiesindicatesthattheGrassRoots Program is having a positive impact on the di?usion of ??? in the classroomsofschoolsthataremembersoftheNetworkofInnovative Schools(???),anditismakingasigni?cantcontributiontothedevel- opmentofacultureofinnovation.TheexistenceofGrassRootsprojects hasalsoincreasedthecapacityforinnovationbyempoweringanden- ablingtheschoolsandteacherstoworkonmultipleinnovationssimul- taneously.Also,thereissu?cientevidencetoshowthatGrassRootshas hadamajorimpacton:teacherprofessionallearning;teachertechnol- ogyskilldevelopment;studenttechnologyskilldevelopment,student employabilityskilldevelopment;accesstoteachingresources;leader- shipopportunities;andschoolgrowthanddevelopment.
