Original Article http: //www.lib.okayama-u.ac.jp/www/acta/ DecisionalBalanceofCondom UseandDepressedMood amongIncarceratedMaleAdolescents NoriyoNagamuneandJeffreyM.Bellis FacultyofHealthSciences,OkayamaUniversityMedicalSchool,Okayama700-8558,Japan,andDepartmentofHealthBehavior, SchoolofPublicHealth,UniversityofAlabamaatBirmingham,Birmingham,Alabama35205,USA Theassociationbetweendepressedmoodandcondom usewasexaminedamongincarceratedmale adolescents.OnehundredandeightymaleadolescentswhoweredetainedinBirmingham,Alabama in theUnitedStateswereinterviewedduring aperiodofincarceration.Contrarytopatterns generallyfoundinadultsamples,nearly50 ofthisadolescentsamplethatdidnotusecondoms regularlyactuallyrecognizedtheadvantagesofcondom use.Thisbehaviorpatternwasdeemed “inconsistent,”andthoseengaginginthis“inconsistent”behaviorpatternwerefoundtohavea higherscoreofdepressedmoodcomparedtoparticipantswitha“consistent”behaviorpattern.As aresult,arelationshipbetween depressedmoodanddecisionalbalanceforcondom usewithin adolescentswasevident.These?ndingssuggestthatassessmentandtreatmentofdepressedmood within thishigh-risk population couldpotentiallycontributetoareduction in high-risk sexual behaviors.
