The objective of the study was to examine distinguishable
characteristicsbetweenLithuanianindigenouspigsandtheirhybrids
throughthepresenceofwattles,coatcolorationpatternsofnewborn
pigletsandtheirearlygrowth.IntrogressionofwildboarintoLithuanian
indigenouspigsreducedthenumberofstillbornanddeadpigletsuntil
3 weeks of age (0.1p£0.05). Negative correlations between the
numberandweightofpigletsatbirthwerefound.Thehighestportionof
lowweightpigletsandthelowestmeanweightatbirthwasfoundfor1/4
WBpiglets(p0.05)buttheirearlygrowthrateswerehigherthanthose
of1/2WBpiglets.However,thehighestgrowthratesweredetermined
forpurebredLithuanianindigenouspigs(p0.05).Theweightatbirth
of male piglets was higher (p0.05) than that of female piglets in all
studied groups. The higher weight of male piglets from birth until
weaning(p0.05)wasonlyin1/2WBgenotype.71.7%of1/4WBand
31.6%of1/2WBpigletsinheritedwattles,amorphologicalfeatureof
Lithuanianindigenouspigs.Thestripedpatternwasfoundinall1/2WB
pigletsandin32.1%of1/4WBpiglets.Theportionofwildboarhada
significanteffectonpigletcoatcoloration.

INTRODUCTION
Wild mammals have long been associated closely with the human food
chain,beingthesourcefordomesticatedanimalsandconsideredtoprovidewild
harvests (Macmillan and Phillip, 2008; White and Lowe, 2008). Archaeological
evidenceindicatesthatduringthemedievaltimeswildmammalswereconsumed
primarily by the governing elites (Vitkunas, 2006; Macmillan and Phillip, 2008).
