Original Article http: //www.lib.okayama-u.ac.jp/www/acta/ EectofChangeinBodyMassIndexonMorbidityin Non-obeseUniversityGraduates KazuoTobe,ToshioOgura,ChiakiTsukamoto,HajimeInoue, JiroArata,andKazuharuMatsuura, HealthandMedicalCenter,OkayamaUniversity,Okayama700-8530,Japan,and OkayamaUniversityHospital,Okayam700-8558,Japan ToestablishtheactualserialchangesinbodyweightinJapanesepeopleandtoelucidatethein?uence ofchangesinBMIonmorbidity,weconductedahistoricalcohortstudyofuniversitygraduates from1955to1990usingquestionnairesandBMIdata.Thesubjectsofthisstudywere3,675university graduatesaged26-62yearsinwhomBMIwasdeterminedatthetimeofenrollmentintheuniversity (Pre-BMI),5to40yearsearlier.Morbidity(oneormoresystemdiseasesorobesity-relatedsystem diseases)wasanalyzedaccordingtocurrentage,sex,currentBMI,ΔBMI(dierencebetween currentBMIandpre-BMI),andvariouslifestylevariables.Theproportionofoverweightsubjects atenrollmenttouniversitywashigherinrecentmalestudentscomparedtooldstudents,butnotin femalegraduates,andtheBMIinbothgendersincreasedprogressivelyaftergraduation,especially inrecentmalegraduates.Pre-BMIcorrelatednegativelyandsigni?cantlywithΔBMI.The percentagesofobese(BMI 30kg/m)malesandfemaleswere1.6 and0.5 ,respectively,and highmorbiditywasobservedin56.1 and42.2 ofmalesandfemales,respectively.Stepwise regressionanalysisshowedthatinsubjectswithnormalBMIatenrollment,prospectivemorbidity wasdependentonΔBMIinadditiontoage.Ourresultsindicatethatinsubjectswithnormalbody weight,prospectivemorbidityisdeterminedbyincrementofΔBMI,andsuggestthatmaintenance ofBMIatthelateadolescencelevelisanimportantfactorinpreventingfuturedisease.
