WeusethemovementvelocitiesofGPSstationsinwesternSichuanprovince,China,todeterminethedistributionofhorizontal strainaccumulationbeforethe2008WenchuanMs8.0earthquakewithapiecewiseapproximationapproachandthecoseismic displacements to determine the fault slips of the earthquake with an inversion analysis method. The results show that the distributionoftheprincipalstrainratesisstronglyrelatedtotheactivefaultsintheregion,butalongLongmenshanfaultwhere theearthquakeoccurred,thestrainratesaremuchlowerthantheothers.Thefaultslipdistributionshowsmainlyathrustingwith dextralstriking,andthefaultslipsintheupperpartsofthefaultplaneareingeneralbigger.Usingthecurrentstrainaccumulation rateandthereleasedenergybytheearthquake,wepredictsuchabigearthquakeinLongmenshanfaultzonewillhappenin460to 1380years. 1.Introduction Aftertheearthquake,theareaattractedalotofattentions inscienti?ccommunity.Zhangetal.[3
