ANALYTICSOLUTIONSOFNONLINEAR COURNOTDUOPOLYGAME AKIOMATSUMOTOANDMAMISUZUKI Received12December2004 Weconstruct aCournot duopoly model with production externality inwhich reaction functionsareunimodal.WeconsiderthecaseofaCournotmodelwhichhasastableequi- libriumpoint.Thenweshowtheexistenceofanalyticsolutionsofthemodel.Moreover, weseekgeneralsolutionsofthemodelintheformofnonlinearsecond-orderdi?erence equation. 1.Introduction The main aim of this study is toconstruct an explicit form of an analytic solution of a multidimensional di?erence equation. To this end, we present a nonlinear Cournot duopolymodelwithunimodalreactionfunctions,showthatitsdynamicalsystemisdou- blelogisticwhentheproductionexternalitiesinvolvedgetstronger,andthengiveacon- structiveproofoftheexistenceofananalyticsolutionofthedynamicalsystem. Itiswellknownthatthereisanexistencetheoremfornonlineardi?erentialequations, which guarantees theexistence ofananalytic solution. Itisalsowellknown thatthere isnogeneralexistencetheoremforanonlineardi?erenceequation.Inconsequence,we checkwhether adiscrete-time system tobeconsidered hasasolution ornot,andthen weexamine itsdynamical characteristic. Inspiteofthisinconvenience, adiscrete-time dynamicalsystemisusefulforanalyzingeconomicphenomenaobservedintherealeco- nomicworldsuchasbusiness?uctuationsthatoccurinrealtime.Asfarasglobaldynam- icsareconcerned, theusualprocedureistoperform numerical simulations tovisualize howadynamical process evolvesovertime, even ifanalytical treatment isinsu?cient. However,itisstillpossiblethatnumerical simulations donotapproximatethetruebe- haviorofadiscrete-time system,mainly duetocomputer’sstorage limitations; trunca- tions errors and the binary representation of numbers.
