Through a suitable ad hoc assumption, a nonlinear PDE governing a three-dimensional weak, irrotational, steady vector ?eld is reduced to a system of two nonlinear ODEs: the ?rst of which corresponds to the two-dimensional case, while the second involves also the third ?eld component. By using several analytical tools as well as linear approximations based on the weakness ofthe ?eld, the ?rst equation istransformed toan Abel di?erential equation which is solved parametrically. Thus, weobtain thetwocomponents ofthe?eld asexplicit functions ofa parameter.Thederived solution isapplied tothetwo-dimensional smallperturbation frictionless ?ow past solid surfaces with either sinusoidal orparabolic geometry,where the plane velocities areevaluated overthebody’ssurfaceinthecaseofasubsonic?ow. 1.Introduction First-orderPDEs,whichmostlyappearin?uidmechanics,describethemotionofidealas well as of real ?uids 1–3 and govern even the electrostatic plasma oscillation 4. As is wellknown,thereisnocompletegeneraltheoryconcerningthederivationofexactanalytical solutionsforsuchequations.However,generalsolutionscanbeobtainedforthequasilinear forms by means of the subsidiary Lagrange equations 1, Section 2.6.a, Appendix A. We also mention Charpit’s method for the general nonlin
