Chickmortality(CM)isoneofthemajorconstraintstotheexpansionofthepoultryindustryinZambia.Ofthe2,829aviandisease casessubmittedtothenationaldiagnosticlaboratorybasedattheCentralVeterinaryResearchInstituteinLusakabetween1995 and2007,34.39%(973/2,829)werefromCMcases.Thediseaseaccountedfor40.2%(218,787/544,903)mortalityinthea?ected ?ockswith89.6%(196,112/218,787)ofthea?ectedbirdsdyingwithinsevendays.MajorbacteriaspeciesinvolvedwereEscherichia coli,Salmonellagallinarum,andProteusspeciesbeingisolatedfrom84.58%,46.15%,and26.93%ofthereportedCMcases(n = 973),respectively.DetectionofSalmonellatyphimurium,Salmonellaenteritidis,andSalmonelladublinindicatesthatpoultryhas thepotentialoftransmittingzoonoticpathogenicbacteriatohumans.TheproportionofSalmonellagallinarumreactorsinthe adultbreedingstockwasgenerallylow(0.5%)throughoutthestudyperiodalthoughitsprevalencein
