Micellar liquid chromatography (MLC) is an e?cient alternative to conventional reversed-phase liquid chromatography with hydro-organic mobile phases. Almost three decades of experience have resulted in an increasing production of analytical applications.CurrentconcernabouttheenvironmentalsorevealsMLCasaninterestingtechniquefor“green”chemistrybecause itusesmobilephasescontaining90%ormorewater.Thesemicellarmobilephaseshavealowtoxicityandarenotproducing hazardouswastes.Thestationaryphaseismodi?edwithanapproximatelyconstantamountofsurfactantmonomers,andthe solubilising capability of the mobile phase is altered by the presence of micelles, giving rise to a great variety of interactions (hydrophobic,ionic,andsteric)withmajorimplicationsinretentionandselectivity.Fromitsbeginningsin1980,thetechnique hasevolveduptobecominginarealalternativeinsomeinstances(andacomplementinothers)toclassicalRPLCwithaqueous- organicmixtures,owingtoitspeculiarfeaturesanduniqueadvantages.Theadditionofanorganicsolventtothemobilephase was,however,soonsuggestedinordertoenhancethelowe?cienciesandweakelutionstrengthassociatedwiththemobilephases thatcontainedonlymicelles. 1.Introduction are genuinely interesting given current concerns about reducingorganiccontaminantresiduesinlaboratories.
