BLOWUPOFSOLUTIONSWITHPOSITIVEENERGY INNONLINEARTHERMOELASTICITY WITHSECONDSOUND SALIMA.MESSAOUDIANDBELKACEMSAID-HOUARI Received6November2003andinrevisedform14April2004 This work isconcerned with asemilinear thermoelastic system, where the heat ?ux is given byCattaneo’slawinstead oftheusual Fourier’slaw.Wewill improve our earlier resultbyshowingthattheblowupcanbeobtainedforsolutionswith“relatively”positive initial energy.Our technique ofproofisbased onamethod used byVitillarowith the necessarymodi?cationsimposedbythenatureofourproblem. 1.Introduction Results concerning existence, blowup, and asymptotic behaviors of smooth, as well as weak,solutionsinclassicalthermoelasticity havebeenestablishedbyseveralauthorsover thepasttwodecades.Seeinthisregard[1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,11,12,13,14,17,18,20]. Forthermoelasticity withsecondsound,Tarabek[21]consideredproblemsrelatedto theone-dimensional system utt?a ux,θ,q uxx+b ux,θ,q θx=α1 ux,θ qqx, θt+g ux,θ,q qx+d ux,θ,q utx=α2 ux,θ qqt, (1.1) τ ux,θ qt+q+k ux,θ θx=0 inbothbounded andunbounded situations andestablished global existenceresultsfor smallinitialdata.Healsoshowedthatthese“classical”solutionstendtoequilibriumast tendstoin?nity;however,norateofdecayhasbeendiscussed.Inhiswork,Tarabekused theusualenergyargumentandexploitedsomerelationsfromthesecondlawofthermo- dynamicstoovercomethedi?cultyarisingfromthelackofPoincare’sinequality inthe unbounded domains. Relationsfromthermodynamics havebeenalsousedbyHrusa Tarabek[4]toproveaglobal existencefortheCauchyproblem toaclassical thermoe- lasticity system and then byHrusa Messaoudi [3] toestablish ablowup result for a thermoelastic system.Saouli[19]usedthenonlinear semigroup theory toprovealocal existenceresultforasystemsimilartotheoneconsideredbyTarabek.
