Althoughobesityisawell-establishedcardiovascularriskfactor,somecontroversyhasarisenwithregardtoitse?ectonhospital mortalityinpatientsadmittedforacutecoronarysyndrome.Methods.Clinicalandanthropometricvariableswereanalyzedin patientsconsecutivelyadmittedforacutecoronarysyndrometoauniversityhospitalbetween2009and2010,andthecorrelation ofthosevariableswithhospitalmortalitywasexamined.Results.Atotalof824patientswithadiagnosisofmyocardialinfarction orunstableanginawereanalyzed.Bodymassindexwasanindependentfactorinhospitalmortality(oddsratio0.739(IC95%: 0.597?0.916),P=0.006).Mortalityinnormalweight(n=218),overweight(n=399),andobese(n=172)subjectswas6.1%, 3.1%,and4.1%,respectively,withnostatisticallysigni?cantdi?erencesbetweenthegroups.Conclusions.Thereissomethingofa paradoxintherelationshipbetweenbodymassindexandhospitalmortalityinpatientswithacutecoronarysyndromeinthatthe mortalityratedecreasesasbodymassindexincreases.However,nostatisticallysigni?cantdi?erenceshavebeenfoundinnormal weight,overweight,orobesesubjects. 1.
