Themaintheoreticalandnumericalaspectsofadesignmethodforoptimumcontrar-rotating(CR)propellersforfastmarine craftsarepresented.Weproposeareformulatedversionofawell-knowndesigntheoryforcontra-rotatingpropellers,bytaking advantageofanewfullynumericalalgorithmforthecalculationofthemutuallyinducedvelocitiesandintroducingnewfeatures such as numerical lifting surface corrections, use of an integrated modern cavitation/strength criteria, a modi?ed method to considerdi?erentnumbersofbladesamongthetwopropellers,andtoallowforanunloadingfunctioninthesearchforthe optimalcirculationdistribution.Thepaper?rstintroducesthemaintheoreticalprinciplesofthenewmethodsandthendiscusses thein?uenceofthemaindesignparametersonanemblematicexampleofapplicationinthecaseofcounterrotatingpropellers forapodpropulsordesignedforfastplaningcrafts(35knotsandabove). 1.Introduction In this paper, we present the main theoretical elements of a modi?ed CRP design method based on the general frameworkofMorganbutreformulateditsmostsimpli?ed
