Theanalysisof255bottomtrawlsamplesobtainedinannualexperimentalsurveys(2007–2010)alongthewesternMediterranean shows the existence of ?ve well-de?ned demersal assemblages that follow a depth distribution: (a) upper shelf assemblages, includingtwoassemblagesdi?erentiatedbythetypeofsubstrate(sand-muddyandterrigenousmuddybottoms);(b)amiddle shelfassemblage;(c)anupperslopeassemblage;(d)amiddleslopeassemblage.Faunally,theyaredominatedby?sh(37%of452 totalspecies),followedbycrustaceans(22%),molluscs(17%),echinoderms(9%),andotherinvertebrates(15%).Theassemblages identi?edshowedmajoralterationsontheshelfandshelfedgeandlesspronouncedonesontheupperandmiddleslope.The averagediversityvaluesweremoreorlesshigh,evidencingthehighspeciesrichnessinthewesternMediterranean.Theidenti?ed assemblagesmayfacilitatefuturemultispecies?sheriesmanagementbasedonanecosystemapproach. 1.Introduction summary, it can be said that in addition to the ph
