Although centralized time slot assignment protocolsarepreferredinmanyWSNs,acentralizedapproachisnotscalable.Inthis article,anewenergyefficient,delaysensitive,andfaulttolerantdistributedtimeslot assignmentalgorithm,referredtoasft_DTSM,isproposedforsensornetworksunder convergecasttrafficpattern.ft_DTSMaimsatoperatingwithlowdelayandlowenergy underfaultynodesassumption.Insteadofrandomaccessbasedperiods,itassignsslots withthehelpoftinyrequestslots.Whiletraditionalslotassignmentalgorithmsdonot allowassigningthesameslotwithintwohopneighbors,becauseofthehiddennode problem, ft_DTSM canassign, if the assignment is suitable for convergecast traffic. Simulationresultshaveshownthatbothdelayandenergyconsumptionperformancesof ft_DTSM is superior to existing distributed slot assignment protocols for WSNs. ft_DTSMcanalsodistributetheslotssothatthenetworkcancontinueitsoperation againstasinglepointoffailure.Althoughft_DTSMhasasomewhatlongerexecution time,itsscalabilitycharacteristicmayprovideapplicationspecifictimedurations.
