Abstract
Objective:WesoughttodetermineifdifferencesinthedistributionandcharacteristicsofadiposetissuebetweenSouth
AsiansandwhiteCaucasiansaccountfordifferencesinriskfactorsforcardiovasculardisease.
ResearchDesignandMethods:Werecruited108healthySouthAsians(36.8years)andwhiteCaucasians(34.2years)within
threeBMIstrata.Bodycomposition,adipocytesize,abdominalfatarea,andhepaticadipositywereassessedandrelatedto
fastingglucose,insulin,lipidsandadiponectin.
Results:Afteradjustmentforage,sex,andBMI,SouthAsianscomparedtowhiteCaucasianshadhigherlnfastinginsulin
(mean difference (md): 0.44; 95% CI: 0.20–0.69), lower HDL cholesterol (md: 20.13; 95% CI:20.26 to 20.01), and lower
adiponectin(md:22.38;95%CI:23.59to21.17).SouthAsiansalsohadmorebodyfat(md:2.69;95%CI:0.70to4.69),
lowerleanmusclemass(md:23.25;95%CI:25.35to21.14),increasedwaisttohipratio(md:0.03;95%CI:0.01–0.05),less
superficialsubcutaneousabdominaladiposetissue(md:22.94;95%CI:25.56to20.32),moredeep/visceraltosuperficial
adiposetissueratio(md0.34;95%CI:0.02to0.65),andmoreliverfat(md:7.43%;95%CI:2.30to12.55%).Adipocytearea
was increased in South Asians compared to white Caucasians (md: 64.26; 95% CI: 24.3 to 104.1) units2. Adjustment for
