Methodology/PrincipalFindings:Avisualstimulusblinkingatafixedlocationwasperceivedtobemovinglaterallywhen theflashonsetwassynchronizedtoanalternatingleft-rightsoundsource.Thisillusoryvisualmotionwasstrengthenedwith anincreasingretinaleccentricity(2.5degto20deg)andoccurredmorefrequentlywhentheonsetsoftheaudioandvisual stimuliweresynchronized. Conclusions/Significance: We clearlydemonstratedthat thealternation ofsound location inducesillusory visual motion when vision cannot provide accurate spatial information. The present findings strongly suggest that the neural representationsofauditoryandvisualmotionprocessingcanbiaseachother,whichyieldsthebestestimatesofexternal eventsinacomplementarymanner.
