Methods:28runners[18males,age=37(SD9)years,bodymass=70(13)kg,height=173(9)cm,percentbodyfat=17(7) %]completedatestbatteryconsistingofmeasurementofDLNOandDLCOatrest,andagradedexercisetesttodetermine runningeconomyandaerobiccapacitypriortothe2011SteamtownMarathon(Scranton,PA).Onetothreeweekslater,all runnerscompletedthemarathon(range:2:22:38to4:48:55).Linearregressionsdeterminedtherelationbetweenfinishing timeandavarietyofanthropometriccharacteristics,restinglungfunctionvariables,andexerciseparameters. Results:InrunnersmeetingBostonMarathonqualificationstandards,74%ofthevarianceinmarathonfinishingtimewas accountedforbydifferencesinDLNOrelativetobodysurfacearea(BSA)(SEE=11.8min, p,0.01);however,therelation betweenDLNOorDLCOtofinishingtimewasnon-significantinthenon-qualifiers(p=0.14to0.46).WhereasbothDLCO and DLNO were predictive of finishing time for all finishers, DLNO showed a stronger relation (r2=0.30, SEE=33.4min, p,0.01)comparedtoDLCOwhenconsideringBSA. Conclusion:DLNOisaperformance-limitingfactorinonlyBostonqualifiers.Thissuggeststhatalveolar-capillarymembrane conductanceisalimitationtoperformanceinfastermarathoners.Additionally,DLNO/BSApredictsmarathonfinishingtime andaerobiccapacitymoreaccuratelythanDLCO.
