NH4Ac has beenusedinbehavioralassaysbothasachemosensoryneutralcompoundandasanattractant. Methodology/MainFindings:HereweshowthatoverarangeofconcentrationsNH4Accanbedetectedbothasawater soluble attractant andas anodorant, and that ammoniaandacetic acid individuallyact as olfactory attractants. We use geneticanalysistoshowthatNaClandNH4Acsensationaremediatedbyseparatepathwaysandthatammoniumsensation dependsonthecyclicnucleotidegatedionchannelTAX-2/TAX-4,butacetatesensationdoesnot.Furthermoreweshow + thatsodium-acetate(NaAc)andammonium-chloride(NH4Cl)arenotdetectedasNa andCl2specificstimuli,respectively. Conclusions/Significance:ThesefindingsclarifythebehavioralresponseofC.eleganstoNH4Ac.Theresultsshouldhavean impact on the design and interpretation of chemosensory experiments studying detection and adaptation to soluble compoundsinthenematodeCaenorhabditiselegans.
