Because statins can reduce chemokine expression in patients with coronary diseases, we wantedtotestwhetherthiscanbeachievedinpatientswithCrohn’sdisease. Methodology/PrincipalFindings:Weinvestigatedplasmalevelsofchemokines(CCL2,CCL4,CCL11,CCL13,CCL17,CCL22, CCL26,CXCL8,CXCL10)andendothelialcytokines(sP-selectin,sE-selectin,sICAM-3,thrombomodulin)intenCrohn’sdisease patientsbeforeandafterthirteenweeks’dailytreatmentwith80mgatorvastatin.Ofthe13substancesinvestigated,only CXCL10wasfoundtobesignificantlyreduced(by34%,p=0.026)inallofthetreatedpatients.LevelsofCXCL10correlated withC-reactiveprotein(r=0.82,p,0.01). Conclusions/Significance:CXCL10isaligandfortheCXCR3receptor,theactivationofwhichresultsintherecruitmentofT lymphocytesandtheperpetuationofmucosalinflammation.HencethereductionofplasmaCXCL10levelsbyatorvastatin mayrepresentacandidateforanapproachtothetreatmentofCrohnsdiseaseinthefuture.
