To investigate shedding patterns and putative effectsonanavianhost,wedevelopedacolonizationmodelinwhichawildbirdspecies,theEuropeanRobin Erithacus rubecula,wasinoculatedorallywithC.jejunifromeitherahumanpatientorfromanotherwildbirdspecies,theSongThrush Turdusphilomelos.Thesetwoisolatesweregeneticallydistinctfromeachotherandprovokedverydifferenthostresponses. TheSongThrushisolatecolonizedallchallengedbirdsandcolonizationlasted6.8daysonaverage.Birdsinfectedwiththis isolatealsoshowedatransientbutsignificantdecreaseinbodymass.Thehumanisolatedidnotcolonizethebirdsand couldbedetectedonlyinthefecesofthebirdsshortlyafterinoculation.EuropeanRobinsinfectedwiththewildbirdisolate generatedaspecificantibodyresponsetoC.jejunimembraneproteinsfromtheavianisolate,whichalsowascross-reactive tomembraneproteinsofthehumanisolate.Incontrast,EuropeanRobinsinfectedwiththehumanisolatedidnotmounta significantresponsetobacterialmembraneproteinsfromeitherofthetwoisolates.Thedifferenceincolonizationability couldindicatehostadaptations.
