We asked whether presence of FMc, routinely acquired during pregnancy,isaprotectivefactorforbreastcancer. Methodology/PrincipalFindings:DNAextractsfromperipheralbloodspecimenswereobtainedfromapopulation-based case-controlstudyofriskfactorsforbreastcancerinwomen21to45yearsold.Specimensweretestedwithquantitative PCRforpresenceandconcentrationsofmaleDNApresumedtoderivefrompriorpregnancieswithamalefetus.Oddsratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated with consideration of multiple established reproductive and environmentalrisk factorsforbreastcancer.FMcresultsweregenerated on99parouswomen,54withprimaryinvasive breastcancerand45generalpopulationcontrols.FMcprevalencewas56%(25/45)and26%(14/54)incontrolsandcases, respectively.
