Abstract
Functionalneuroimagingstudiesofdecision-makingsofarmainlyfocusedondecisionsunderuncertaintyornegotiation
withotherpersons.Dualprocesstheoryassumesthat,insuchsituations,decisionmakingreliesoneitherarapidintuitive,
automatedoraslowerrationalprocessingsystem.However,itstillremainselusivehowpersonalityfactorsorprofessional
requirementsmightmodulatethedecisionprocessandtheunderlyingneuralmechanisms.Sincedecisionmakingisakey
task of managers, we hypothesized that managers, facing higher pressure for frequent and rapid decisions than non-
managers,prefertheheuristic,automateddecisionstrategyincontrasttonon-managers.Suchdifferentstrategiesmay,in
turn,relyondifferentneuralsystems.Wetestedmanagersandnon-managersinafunctionalmagneticresonanceimaging
studyusingaforced-choiceparadigmonword-pairs.Managersshowedsubcorticalactivationintheheadofthecaudate
nucleus,andreducedhemodynamicresponsewithinthecortex.Incontrast,non-managersrevealedtheoppositepattern.
