Methodology/PrincipalFindings:Sixty-onehealthywomenandmenweresequentiallyfedeachofthreedietsforthree weeks,inrandomorder,foratotalofnineweeks.Dietswereidenticalexceptfor7%ofenergy(approximately20g/day), whichwasprovidedeitherbyoleicacid,byindustrialtransfattyacids,orbyamixtureof80%cis-9,trans-11and20%trans- 10, cis-12 CLA. After the oleic acid diet, mean (6 SD) serum LDL cholesterol was 2.6860.62mmol/L compared to 3.0060.66mmol/L after industrial trans fatty acids (p,0.001), and 2.9260.70mmol/L after CLA (p,0.001). Compared to oleicacid,HDL-cholesterolwas0.0560.12mmol/Llowerafterindustrialtransfattyacids(p=0.001)and0.0660.10mmol/L lowerafterCLA(p,0.001).Thetotal-to–HDLcholesterolratiowas11.6%higherafterindustrialtransfattyacids(p,0.001) and10.0%higherafterCLA(p,0.001)relativetotheoleicaciddiet. Conclusions/Significance:Highintakesofan80:20mixtureofcis-9,trans-11andtrans-10,cis-12CLAraisethetotaltoHDL cholesterolratioinhealthyvolunteers.TheeffectofCLAmaybesomewhatlessthanthatofindustrialtransfattyacids.
