Numerous studies investigated theability todetect asignalin aspeech or anoisemasker orthe effect ofspatial separation of signaland maskerontheamountofmasking,butthereisalackofstudiesinvestigatingthecombinedeffectsofmanycuesonthe maskingasistypicalfornaturallisteningsituations.Thecurrentstudyusingfree-fieldlisteningsystematicallyevaluatesthe combinedeffectsofharmonicityandinharmonicitycuesinmulti-tonemaskersandcuesresultingfromspatialseparationof targetsignalandmaskeronthedetectionofapuretoneinamulti-toneoranoisemasker.Alinearbinauralprocessing modelwasimplementedtopredictthemaskedthresholdsinordertoestimatewhethertheobservedthresholdscanbe accounted for by energetic masking in the auditory periphery or whether other effects are involved. Thresholds were determinedforcombinationsoftwotargetfrequencies(1and8kHz),twospatialconfigurations(maskerandtargeteither co-locatedorspatiallyseparatedby90degreesazimuth),andfivedifferentmaskertypes(fourcomplexmulti-tonestimuli, onenoisemasker).Aspatialseparationoftargetandmaskerresultedinareleasefrommaskingforallmaskertypes.The amountofmaskingsignificantlydependedonthemaskertypeandfrequencyrange.Thevariousharmonicandinharmonic relationsbetweentargetandmaskerorbetweencomponentsofthemaskerresultedinacomplexpatternofincreasedor decreasedmaskedthresholdsincomparisontothepredictedenergeticmasking.Theresultsindicatethatharmonicitycues affectthedetectabilityofatonaltargetinacomplexmasker.
