However, studies in renal patients and in obese individuals who are onaweight-lossdietsuggestthatbetainesupplementationraises bloodcholesterol;datain healthyindividualsarelacking.Suchaneffectoncholesterolwouldcounteractanyfavourable effectonhomocysteine.Wethereforeinvestigatedtheeffectofbetaine,ofitsprecursorcholine in the form of phosphatidylcholine, and of the classical homocysteine-lowering vitamin folic acidonbloodlipidconcentrationsinhealthyhumans.
