HortanceManda*,LuanaM.Arce,TarraFoggie,PankhilShah,JohnP.Grieco,NicoleL.Achee DepartmentofPreventiveMedicineandBiometrics,UniformedServicesUniversityoftheHealthSciences,Bethesda,Maryland,UnitedStatesofAmerica Abstract Background:PreviousstudieshaveidentifiedthebehavioralresponsesofAedesaegyptitoirritantandrepellentchemicals thatcanbeexploitedtoreduceman-vectorcontact.Maximumefficacyofinterventionsbasedonirritantchemicalactions will, however, require full knowledge of variables that influence vector resting behavior and how untreated ‘‘safe sites’’ contributetooverallimpact. Methods:Usingalaboratoryboxassay,restingpatternsoftwopopulationstrainsoffemaleAe.aegypti(THAIandPERU) wereevaluatedagainsttwomaterialtypes(cottonandpolyester)atvariousdark:lightsurfaceareacoverage(SAC)ratioand contrast configuration (horizontal and vertical) under chemical-free and treated conditions. Chemicals evaluated were alphacypermethrinandDDTatvaryingconcentrations. Results:Underchemical-freeconditions,darkmaterialhadsignificantlyhigherrestingcountscomparedtolightmaterialat allSAC,andsignificantlyincreasedwhenmaterialwasinhorizontalconfiguration.Cottonelicitedstrongerresponsethan polyester.Withinthetreatmentassays,significantlyhigherrestingcountswereobservedonchemical-treateddarkmaterial comparedtountreatedlightfabric.However,comparedtomatchedcontrols,significantlylessrestingobservationswere madeonchemical-treateddarkmaterialoverall.Mostimportantly,restingobservationsonuntreatedlightmaterial(or‘‘safe sites’’)inthetreatmentassaydidnotsignificantlyincreaseformanyofthetests,evenat25%SAC.Knockdownrateswere #5%forallassays.Significantlymoreobservationsofflyingmosquitoesweremadeintestassaysunderchemical-treatment conditionsascomparedtocontrols.
