In the AMP, neutral symbols (e.g., a Chinese pictograph, called the target) are presented, following an emotional stimulus(knownastheprime).Participantsoftenmisattributethepositiveornegativeaffectoftheprimingimagestothe targets in spite of receiving aninstruction to ignore the primes. The AMPeffect has been investigated using behavioral measures;however,itisdifficulttoidentifywhentheAMPeffectoccursinemotionalprocessing—whethertheeffectmay occur in the earlier attention allocation stage or in the later evaluation stage. In this study, we examined the neural correlatesofaffectmisattribution,usingevent-relatedpotential(ERP)dividingtheparticipantsintotwogroupsbasedon theirtendencytowardaffectmisattribution.TheERPresultsshowedthattheamplitudeofP2waslargerfortheprimeatthe parietallocationinparticipantsshowingalowtendencytomisattributionthanforthoseshowingahightendency,while theeffectofjudgingneutraltargetsamissaccordingtotheprimeswasreflectedinthelateprocessingoftargets(LPP).In addition,thetopographicpatternanalysisrevealedthatEPN-likecomponenttotargetswascorrelatedwiththedifference ofAMPtendencyaswellasP2toprimesandLPPtotargets.Takentogether,themechanismoftheaffectivemisattribution wascloselyrelatedtotheattentionallocationprocessing.Ourfindingsprovideneuralevidencethatevaluationsofneutral targetsaremisattributedtoemotionalprimes.
