ElectrophysiologicalCorrelatesofBinocularStereo DepthwithoutBinocularDisparities KarolineSpang1*,BarbaraGillam2,ManfredFahle1,3 1CentreforCognitiveScience,UniversityofBremen,Bremen,Germany,2SchoolofPsychology,UniversityofNewSouthWales,Sydney,Australia,3TheHenryWellcome LaboratoriesforVisionScience,CityUniversity,London,UnitedKingdom Abstract Asmallregionofbackgroundpresentedtoonlyoneeyeinanotherwisebinoculardisplaymay,undercertainconditions,be resolved in the visual system by interpreting the region as a small gap between two similar objects placed at different depths,withthegaphiddeninoneeyebyparallax.Thishasbeencalledmonoculargapstereopsis.Weinvestigatedthe electrophysiologicalcorrelateofthistypeofstereopsisbymeansofsumpotentialrecordingsin12observers,comparing VEP’sforthisstimulus(‘‘GillamStereo’’,AuthorBGhasstrongreservationsaboutthisterm)withthoseforsimilarstimuli containingdisparitybaseddepthandwithnodepth(flat).Inadditionweincludedseveralcontrolstimuli.Theresultsshowa pronouncedearlynegativepotentialatalatencyofaround170ms(N170)forallstimulicontainingnon-identicalelements, betheyadifferencecausedbybinoculardisparityorbycompletelyunmatchedmonocularcontours.Asecondnegative potential with latency around 270ms (N270), on the other hand, is present only with stimuli leading to fusion and the perceptionofdepth.Thissecondcomponentissimilarfordisparity-basedstereopsisandmonoculargap,or‘‘GillamStereo’’ althoughslightlymorepronouncedfortheformer.Weconjecturethatthefirstcomponentisrelatedtothedetectionof differencesbetweentheimagesofthetwoeyesthatmaytheneitherbefused,leadingtostereopsisandthecorresponding secondpotential,orelsetoinhibitionandrivalrywithoutalatertraceintheVEP.Thefindingthatthat‘‘GillamStereo’’leads tocorticalresponsesatthesameshortlatenciesasdisparitybasedstereopsisindicatesthatitmaypartlyrelyonquiteearly corticalmechanisms.
