Moreover pre-mating isolation may be more effective at maintaining morphological differentiation between divergent populations. In the context of Australian rainforest endemic skinks that were historically subjected to refugial isolation, this study examined the following predictions:1)thatassortativefemalepreferenceisassociatedwithmorerecentdivergenceofsouthernC.rubrigularis(S- RED)andC.rhomboidalis(BLUE),butnotwithdeeplydivergentS-REDandnorthernC.rubrigularis(N-RED);and2)thatupon secondarycontact,morphologicaldifferentiationismaintainedbetweenS-REDandBLUE,whereasN-REDandS-REDremain morphogicallyindistinguishable. PrincipalFindings: Femalepreferencetrials foundnoevidenceforassortativefemalepreferencebetween N-REDandS- RED,supportingapreviousgenetichybridzonestudywhichinferredpost-matingbutnopre-matingisolation.Incontrast thereisevidenceforassortativefemalepreferencebetweenS-REDandBLUE,withBLUEfemalespreferringtoassociatewith BLUEmales,butS-REDfemalesshowingnopreference.Multi-locuscoalescentanalyses,usedtoestimatepost-divergence gene-flowbetweenproximallylocatedS-REDandBLUEpopulations,rejectedzerogene-flowfromBLUEtoS-REDandthus REDandBLUEhavemaintainedmorphologicaldifferentiationdespitesecondarycontact.Morphometricanalysesconfirmed alackofmorphologicaldivergencebetweenN-REDandS-REDandestablishedthatBLUEismorphologicallydivergentfrom REDintraitsotherthanthroatcolour. Conclusions/Significance:Long-termisolationhasbeensufficienttogeneratepost-matingisolationbutnomorphological
