We illustrate the technique of empiricalstatisticsbyconsiderationofacommontaskwhenanalyzinghighdimensionaldata:thesimultaneoustestingof hundreds or thousands of hypotheses to determine which, if any, show statistical significance warranting follow-on research.Thenow-commonpracticeofmultipletestinginhighdimensionalexperiment(HDE)settingshasgeneratednew methodsfordetectingstatisticallysignificantresults.Althoughsuchmethodshaveheretoforebeensubjecttocomparative performa
