ExplainingAwaytheBody:ExperiencesofSupernaturally CausedTouchandTouchonNon-HandObjectswithin theRubberHandIllusion JakobHohwy1*.,BryanPaton1,2. 1PhilosophyProgram,MonashUniversity,Clayton,Victoria,Australia,2SchoolofPsychologyandPsychiatry,MonashUniversity,Clayton,Victoria,Australia Abstract Background:Inrubberhandillusionsandfullbodyillusions,touchsensationsareprojectedtonon-bodyobjectssuchas rubberhands,dollsorvirtualbodies.Therobustness,limitsandfurtherperceptualconsequencesofsuchillusionsarenotyet fullyexploredorunderstood.Anumberofexperimentsarereportedthattestthelimitsofavariantoftherubberhandillusion. Methodology/PrincipalFindings:Avariantoftherubberhandillusionisexplored,inwhichtherealandforeignhandsare alignedinpersonalspace.Thepresenceoftheillusionisascertainedwithparticipants’scoresandtemperaturechangesof therealarm.Thisgeneratesabasicillusionoftouchprojectedtoaforeignarm.Participantsarepresentedwithfurther, unusual visuotactile stimuli subsequent to onset of the basic illusion. Such further visuotactile stimulation is found to generateveryunusualexperiencesofsupernaturaltouchandtouchonanon-handobject.Thefindingoftouchonanon- handobjectconflictswithpriorfindings,andtoresolvethisconflictafurtherhypothesisissuccessfullytested:thatwithout prioronsetofthebasicillusionthisunusualexperiencedoesnotoccur. Conclusions/Significance:Arubberhandillusionisfoundthatcanarisewhentherealandtheforeignarmarealignedin personalspace.Thisillusionpersiststhroughperiodsofnotactilestimulationandisstrongenoughtoallowveryunusual experiences of touch felt on a cardboard box and experiences of touch produced at a distance, as if by supernatural causation.Thesefindingssuggestthatone’svisualbodyimageisexplainedawayduringexperienceoftheillusionandthey maybeoffurtherimportancetounderstandingtheroleofexperienceindelusionformation.Thefindingsoftouchonnon- handobjectsmayhelpreconcileconflictingresultsinthisareaofresearch.Inaddition,newevidenceisprovidedthatrelates totherecentlydiscoveredp
