How M. ulcerans is introduced into the skin of humans remains unclear, but it appears that individualslivinginthesameenvironmentmayhavedifferentsusceptibilities. Objectives:Thisstudyaimstodeterminewhetherfrequentcontactswithnaturalwatersources,familyrelationshiporthe practiceofconsanguineousmarriagesareassociatedwiththeoccurrenceofBuruliulcer(BU). Design:Casecontrolstudy. Setting:DepartmentofAtlantique,Benin. Subjects:BU-confirmedcasesthatwerediagnosedandfollowedupattheBUdetectionandtreatmentcenter(CDTUB)of Allada (Department of the Atlantique, Benin) during the period from January 1st, 2006, to June 30th, 2008, with three matchedcontrols(personswhohadnosignsorsymptomsofactiveorinactiveBU)forage,genderandvillageofresidence percase. MainOutcomesMeasured:Contactwithnaturalwatersources,BUhistoryinthefamilyandthepracticeofconsanguineous marriages. Results:Atotalof416participantswereincludedinthisstudy,including104casesand312controls.BUhistoryinthefamily (p,0.001),adjustedbydailycontactwithanaturalwatersource(p=0.007),wassignificantlyassociatedwithhigheroddsof ha
